How to get a business name and website?

I am setting up a little business. I will be selling some items. I know the name i want for my business - but what do i do from a legal point of view - i want to check that the name is ok to use and that i can keep it for my business. Also i want to set up a website for people to view what i am selling and to possibly order on line - any tips on how to do this please? Thanks guys.

One way to legally get your business name is to apply for a business license...if someone else has one like yours, they will contact you so you can pick another name. Also, if you become incorporated...a lawyer or accountant can help you with that..they make sure that no other corporation in your State has that name. If not, it's yours. And for a website, you need to look for companies that do web page hosting. I don't have any to suggest, but I'm sure you could ask around to local businesses to see who they use, or talk to a computer person from a local business or just search on-line. Good luck.

first register your business with the tax office they will give you help and advise you the best way also your local job centre will advise you . you don't pay tax on a new business the first year of setting up . there are a lot of free websites you can choose but for a small fee i find there the best ones as they do it for you.GOOD LUCK

also look at companies house if you are UK based as it shows you names of all companies registered with them
it is also a good idea to google your name- you will find any other companies with the same name- and also if it means something awful in another language( i always thionk of the sweets you can buy in ikea called skum!)

Go to your state controllers web site and do a look up on the business name to see if it is available in the state. If it is register it as the name of the business you'll be doing business under. At the same time, you can decide whether you want to be a sole proprietorship , a partnership or an LLC. You should also go to This link is hidden. If you are in the UK, spike is incorrect - there is no exemption from Uk tax in the first year of trading!
In the UK the registration of business names was abolished many years ago - if you are not a limited company, you just set yourself up and register your website, get your headed paper, etc printed and start to trade.
You need to register with HMRC wihtin 3 months of starting - take advice from them - or someone who actually knows - about keeping records and complying with tax legislation.
